Posting this on behalve of Frank mm0hst if anyone can help?

.
Hi, I have built my brand new comet H-422 as per instruction manual for SSB operation built in the horizontal (streight) position. The measurements for the (M) location are set standard length 1580mm on 1 end element and 1380mm on other end element with 1 whole exposed as per instructions. The instructions also mentoin Balun red mark side which i dont understand as there are no markings on the balun. The balun that came with the antenna seems to be an upgraded balun from a cbl 2000 to a cbl2500 which might have an effect on the SWR I am not sure. I dont have an annalizer so just stuck the antenna up on a temporary pole at 33 feet off the ground to check every thing out. I double checked everything messurement wise and also my coax but i am still getting a high SWR.
I hope someone can help. I will take as many opinions as possible and hopefully get to the bottom of the problem. It might be that the antenna is faulty. I bought it 6wks ago but just got round to trying it out.

Thanks Frank MM0HST

Already sent it to Frank anyway but see here

See the 2nd / 3rd post down

Build quality seems to be poor but nothing that cant be fixed.

Other than checking dimensions and electrical connections I think you have done most things possible.

You can also move away from the manufacturers settings a little to tweak the curves, it’s a lot of fiddling but if your SWR is that high and a bit more of an effort to use the swr meter/radio than it does with the analyser.

The red dot on the balun is most likely to indicate the "driven" side so if you polarise it vertically you have that element upwards. It depends on the type of balun.

BUT, you can connect your coax direct to the dipole ends to see if it will work better to see if it is the balun or not.

If you get time Frank there should be plenty skulls around Thursday and Sunday at the club with time to spare, antenna repair is on the list of stuff to be done anyway.
