ok here is my findings with side by side comparisments with the 756pro3 and ft1000mkv.
All tests were done over a few days with my own antennas and a switch in line so I could do A/B tests
160m I found the 756PRO3 on weak cw and ssb to be a clear winner as it was hearing stuff much better than
the MKV and that was trying everything from pre amps off and on to filter settings
80m I found the pro3 to be better in crowded situations but on weak signals with no major qrm the MKV
was better
30m the MKV was the clear winner better filters for pulling the weak signals out
20m was the band I spent a lot of time on and did lots of playing around and the results were as follows
on CW they were very close I ended up using different headphones and speakers to try and get one better
than the other and to be honest it took ages but felt the MKV sound had the edge only just on ssb the mkv
was better on weak signals with the filtering but in bad crowded conditions the Pro3 was the clear
winner. Now I must say I spent ages on this band trying all sorts of settings and if the MKV had the
roofing filter mod I think it would have been a better test under bad conditions .
17m on cw the Pro3 was better for weak signals and on ssb the two were close and I couldn't decide what
radio was better
15m on cw weak signals I felt they were very close but the pro seemed to have the slight edge on ssb very
similar and would give it to the pro3
12m on cw I had no problem in deciding the MKV was a clear winner I switched the front end to tuned on
ssb was same result MKV
10m on cw/ssb with the front-end on the MKV set to flat the pro3 had the edge but once I switched the
front-end to tuned the MKV came up it was close on cw and ssb I gave it to the MKV now the opening I had
on 10m wasn't long would have been better if it had stayed open longer and would have been able to do more
tests
6m I A/B with the IC 756PRO and IC756PRO3 I felt the PRO3 had a db or two more better receiver. When I
had the pro with preamp 2 on it was similar to pro3 with only preamp 1 on. Conditions were not good to do
tests the ones I did do were mainly Pings and odd weak signal I heard
A few strange things I found on the pro3 was
1 on 40m and 80m I heard a noise on cw like a crispy popping strange as I couldn't detect it on other bands
2 the heat on top of the radio above the display gets very warm so much I was worried that I turned down
the display settings and asked a few others if they had similar and it was similar. One guy had run his pro3 for up to 15hrs
a day since he bought it over a year ago and was fine
Overall the pro3 is a great radio fully loaded with everything needed for casual to contest use
Thanks to John MM0JMK for the use of his radio
