Hi Brendan
Knowing the size of your garden thats a tough one!
Brendan are you able to run a wire out towards your hf antenna?
My thoughts would be some kind of long wire or inverted L made with thin white wire for a low profile.
For 80m we only need 25-30' vertical and about 40'-45' horizontal we can also bend it to fit.
Can you give me a rough idea of the garden. Can the wire run up to mast on chimney? Can it go out to the hf antenna ? can wire be taped on to coax feeding beam?
get back to me and I will come up with a few ideas. Will also give you a hand if you need one to try it out!

interesting design and is direct 50ohm feed
1/3 of an s point down on a 1/4 wave vertical!

may be of use to some of you guys who find it difficult to put ground radials out.

Hi Colin, hope you and the family had a happy Christmas. Thanks for your reply regarding the antenna. As you know my back garden is small which presents quite a few problems. The Cobwebb is about 100ft south of the house at the back of my garage. Any wire errected would have to run N to S to the mast which is only 20ft high at the moment. I use to have a 15ft pole with about 35ft of wire electricaly conected. At th bottom of the pole there is an 18 inch long plastic pipe joined with another 15ft coiled and insulated from ground. The end wire feed's directly into my atu. The wire runs from E to W and allowed me to operate on 40/80m to a fashion. I also conected a quarter wave counter-poise for all HF bands which runs around the outer loft space. I always felt if I had perhaps included a couple of traps the whole thing would have performed better. The antenna and pole is resting in the garage at the moment as I was using the vertical for a few years.
Hope that's enough to go on.
Thanks

brendan some interesting ideas here http://www.geocities.com/grhm.geo/
Have scaled ant from formula
40m vertical dipole would only be 16' width and approx 22' high
40m vertical would be about 14' high x 16 ' wide feedpoint for vertical about 50 ohms
dipole probably anywhere between 50-150 ohms easy to match!
Vertical dipole looks interesting no radials high efficiency and about same size as a 20m loop!
Could be made with thin white wire for low visual impact. Have loads of wire if you would like to try it?
will model both 40m and 80m version and post results here soon.
